20 members of the Council. Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Past-Chairman, Honorary Treasurer; 6 representatives from the 3 constituent bodies (The Institute of Physics, The Institution of Electrical Engineers, The Royal Society of Chemistry); 10 co-opted members.

The Council was formed in 1965. The Aims and Objects of the Council are: To promote and advance the understanding and teaching of vacuum science, technology and its applications by -

  1. Co-ordinating and promoting conferences seminars and publications in these fields.

  2. Encouraging excellence amongst post-graduate students and other young research workers in these fields by awarding (annually) the C R Burch Prize for outstanding work in the field of vacuum science, surface science, thin films or any related topic in which vacuum science and engineering play an important role.

  3. Providing financial assistance to post-graduate students to attend conferences, seminars and courses in these fields.

  4. Representing the UK on the International Union for Vacuum Science Technique and its Applications.

Recent and current activity, apart from the above, is to do with the organization of the 1998 Triennial Vaccum Congress and related events.
