The Fourteenth Internatinal Vacuum Congress (IVC-14) and the Tenth International Conference on SolidSurfaces (ICSS-10) are being organised on behalf of IUVSTA by the UK Institute of Physics and theBritish Vacuum Council and will be held at the International Convention Centre (CC) in Birminghamfrom 31 August through 4 September 1988. Recent meetings in this important triennial series have been held in Yokohama (1995),The Hague (1992), Köln (1989), and Baltimore (1986). Co-located with this meeting for the first timein 1998 will be the Fifth International Conference on Nanometer-scale Science & Technology (NANO-5).NANO-1 was held in conjunction with the STM '90 conference in Baltimore and subsequent meetings in theseries were in Moscow (1993) and Denver (1994); NANO-4 is planned for 1996 in Beijing. The combined meeting will offer a major forum for the presentation and discussion of all of theactivities covered by the IUVSTA Divisions; Applied Surface Science, Electronic Materials & Processing, Nanometer Science and Technique, Plasma Science and Technique, Surface Science,Thin Films, Vacuum Metallurgy, and Vacuum Science.The Programme will comprise plenary, invited and contributed oral presentations, postersessions, and a major instrument exhibition.
